In Defense of the Apostrophe (In Response to Birmingham, UK)

bundangbear responds to recent news that the City of Birmingham, in the UK, is getting rid of its apostrophes. He argues that the apostrophe is that little extra spice that makes the English language more colorful and fun! Plus, of course, it’s grammatically incorrect not to use it, as Birmingham is doing!

Actually, my friend, it is correct.

“its” = Possessive. It is used correctly here.
“it’s” = It is. A contraction using the apostrophe.

Thanks for keeping a keen eye out, my friend!

  3. tuberpie68 says:

I stand corrected! I remember, now that you point it out! I had a hard time getting that straight in school, since to be consistent, both the possessive AND the contraction should use an apostrophe! But,ahhhh, that is simply not the way it’s done in English! (Did I say SIMPLY!?)

by the way, i heard birmingham is also getting rid of the umlatt…who will stand up for the fucking umlatt, the spiciest of all punctuation?…STAND UP!!! STAND UP!!!

  13. bundangbear says:

I think you’re the one to stand up for the umlaut, my friend. (First you need to spell it right!) And what about the prevalence of FAKE umlauts in 80′s metal bands? That I appoint you to look into. I expect a full report!

  20. Germanalien84 says:

ahhhhh its so funny that you like the double “ss” in german language. Looks like a big B, but now we don’t use it anymore.

  21. bundangbear says:

@Germanalien84 Really? I saw it a lot on street signs when I was in Germany/Austria/Switzerland. I remember first seeing it in Vienna (Wien) the Ringstraße.

  22. Germanalien84 says:

Yes, but that is still old gramar and you just still see it on older sighns.
They changed german grammar in 2000 to make it easier, but i think its just more confusing now.
