We’ve always just carried our dogs into the pool with us and gotten them used to it. Next step was always sending them back to the shallow stairs so they know how to get out. They will usually swim to someone waiting there for them. We pretty much did it just like you would a child — a little at a time and know how to be safe and get out. There are little life jackets just for dogs, although we never used them.

Remember that if a dog just runs around the pool whlie you are swimming, she can quickly get overheated and suffer heat stroke. It’s good that you are wanting your dog to go swimming.

Oh, and remember to dry thoroughly to prevent skin issues later. : )

it will come in when it wants to come it…. if it wanted to go it it will go on its own….but if you REALLY WANT him in then they make doggie lifejackets….put him in the pool with that on and he may become more comfortable with the pool if he has fear of pools

go online to a place like petstyle.com and watch the videos for some techniques. My dog learned at a lake…by watching other dogs swim and play in the water. he did not want to go at first, but after a while the desire to be with the "pack" took over and he just went in. I have seen trainers attach a harness to a dog and 2 long leashes…encourage the dog to go in and "help" him across the pool while a trainer holds each leash…it is easier to do than to describe.

Well, I’m sure she’ll come in when she’s ready. Some dogs just aren’t that into the water. I can totally understant you wanting her to come in and join the fun though. Don’t try to force her too much, and don’t take treats in there, but try getting her fave waterproof toy and tossing it around in the pool with your friends or family. She might want to hop in and join.

If she doesn’t want to go in, don’t make her. But if you expose her to water a little more every day she might begin to enjoy it. :)
