English Grammar – Introduction to Contractions

A contraction is two words that are put together to make one word. Some letters are dropped from the second word when words are joined. The dropped letters are replaced by an apostrophe.

    What category would slurred phrases such as “didja” or “gotta” fall? Slang or are they types of contractions considering that they’re used so commonly in everyday speech?

    Good question. I think these words would fall under ‘colloquialisms”.
